Most people try to solve faster by turning harder. That adds lockups and errors. The better solver turns a little slower and never stops.
Speedcubing is applied problem-solving under time pressure. It trains pattern recognition, hand efficiency, and focus. The cube also gives immediate feedback: either the method works or it does not. That makes it a strong skill lab for disciplined practice.

Where sub-30 is won
Sub-30 averages are usually won in three places: cross planning during inspection, efficient F2L pairs, and transition speed into last layer.
A solver with average turning speed and no pauses often beats a solver with fast fingers and frequent stops. That is why lookahead work matters so much.

CFOP first, optimization later
For this milestone, full advanced OLL and deep ZBLL knowledge are optional. Strong two-look OLL, full PLL, and clean F2L can carry you under 30.
If your F2L still contains frequent cube rotations and long searches, extra algorithms give low return. You need fewer moves and better piece tracking first.
Film your solves and count pauses longer than half a second. That single metric often predicts your average better than TPS.
Drill what timing data reveals
Track split times for cross, F2L, OLL, and PLL. If F2L eats 60% of your solve, that is the training priority.
Good drill set: slow-turn no-pause solves, isolated F2L pair insertion reps, and last-layer recognition drills. Slow and smooth in practice becomes fast in solves.
A real plan
- Use CFOP with strong basics: plan full cross in inspection, then execute without regrips.
- Build F2L fluency first. Drill common pair cases until insertions are automatic with minimal rotations.
- Learn full PLL if you have not already. Keep OLL at two-look until F2L pauses are under control.
- Run daily no-pause solves at 70% speed. The goal is continuous flow, not raw turning speed.
- Track split times weekly and train the largest bottleneck block first.
- Do focused sessions of 20 to 40 minutes most days. Consistent short sessions outperform occasional marathon solves.
- Chasing advanced algorithm sets before fixing F2L inefficiency.
- Turning as fast as possible and accepting frequent lockups.
- Ignoring inspection and improvising cross every solve.
- Practicing only full timed solves with no targeted drills.
- Switching methods too often instead of deepening one method.
- Never reviewing solve videos, so recurring pause patterns stay invisible.
Consistency wins. Fast solves come from removing mistakes and pauses, not only from turning speed.
The honest part
Sub-30 is less about talent than discipline. Plan better before the timer starts. Rotate less. Pause less. Drill your weakest phase instead of collecting new algorithms. If you do that for a few months, your average moves. The cube rewards focused repetition every time.
