Do 20 strict pull-ups
Most people have never done ten clean pull-ups. Twenty is rare. Not because it needs elite genetics, but because it needs structure. Random sets to failure feel hard and look productive, yet they fry your elbows and teach you to grind ugly reps. Smart training looks less dramatic and works faster.
Pull-ups are a clean bodyweight strength test. You move your own mass through space with no machine assisting you. Getting to 20 means your back, grip, core, and shoulder control are all strong enough to work together under fatigue.
What top 1% looks like here
Top 1% here means elite relative pulling endurance under strict standards.
Benchmark anchors:
- You complete 20 strict reps with full range and controlled cadence.
- You can repeat 18+ reps across multiple sessions within the same month.
- Grip and scapular control remain intact through final reps (no swinging finish).
- Joint health allows uninterrupted weekly pulling volume for 8+ weeks.
How to measure this: Run a weekly standardized max-rep test and track strict rep count, tempo consistency, and elbow/shoulder tolerance.
The math most people ignore
Each pull-up is a bodyweight row done vertically. If you are heavier, each rep costs more. A trainee at 95 kg doing six reps may be stronger in absolute terms than a 70 kg trainee doing twelve, but the bar only measures relative strength. That is why moderate fat loss often unlocks sudden rep jumps.
+5 to +8 repscommon gain after 5kg fat lossThis is common for lifters who keep strength while cutting. Same muscles, less load per rep.
Strength first, then endurance
Your set of 20 is limited by your weakest link. For most people that is not endurance, it is base pulling strength. If your best weighted pull-up is plus 10 kg for one rep, high-rep sets feel impossible. When that weighted single moves to plus 35 kg, bodyweight reps feel lighter and cleaner.
Do one weekly session that prioritizes weighted pull-ups in low reps. Do one weekly session that prioritizes submax bodyweight volume. That mix builds the engine and the fuel tank.
Stop sets one or two reps before failure on most training days. Reps done with clean speed build capacity. Slow grinders mostly build fatigue.
Keep elbows and shoulders alive
High pull-up volume can inflame elbows if your scapulae are weak and your forearm flexors are overworked. Add dead hangs, horizontal rows, and light hammer curls. These are not vanity accessories. They are joint insurance that lets you train long enough to reach 20.
A real plan
- Train pull-ups twice per week. Day one is weighted strength, day two is bodyweight volume.
- On strength day, do 5 sets of 3 to 5 weighted reps. Add small load when all sets are clean.
- On volume day, perform 6 to 10 sets at 50 to 70% of your max reps. Keep one to two reps in reserve.
- Add 2 to 4 sets of chest-supported rows and one timed dead hang each session.
- Keep bodyweight stable or cut slowly if needed. Rapid cuts kill performance and recovery.
- Test max reps every 4 weeks, not every session. Training builds the number. Testing only measures it.
- Testing max reps three times a week and calling it training.
- Kipping and half reps, then wondering why strict reps do not rise.
- Ignoring rows and hangs, then developing elbow pain.
- Gaining body fat in a long bulk while chasing a relative strength goal.
- Going to failure on every set and losing quality by week two.
- Changing grip width every workout and never mastering one pattern.
Strength is a skill. You do not go to war in training. You practice quality and keep enough in reserve to come back stronger tomorrow.
The honest part
Twenty strict pull-ups is not a gimmick milestone. It is months of clean reps, boring progression, and enough patience to avoid ego sets. Build weighted strength. Accumulate good volume. Protect your elbows. Then one test day your rep nineteen goes up, and twenty follows it.

Deadlift twice your bodyweight
Pulling twice your bodyweight off the floor puts you well past the average gym-goer and into genuinely strong territory for a non-competitor. You get there with a simple progression, brutal consistency on a handful of lifts, and enough food and sleep to recover. The people who stall almost always program-hop, ego-lift with a rounded back, or never eat enough to grow.
Do 10 strict pull-ups
Ten strict pull-ups is a top-tier relative strength benchmark for general fitness. Most people fail because they only test pull-ups instead of training the pieces: bodyweight control, scapular strength, and progressive pulling volume. A simple plan of assisted reps, rows, negatives, and consistency can get most healthy adults there in 4 to 9 months.
Lose Fat on GLP-1 Without Losing Muscle
GLP-1s work. The real question is what happens after the first 6 to 12 months. If you treat them like a temporary appetite hack, rebound risk is high. If you pair them with protein targets, resistance training, and a maintenance plan, results can last.
